Lupus Management

Lupus also known as lupus erythematosus is a disease affecting the connective tissues. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease which is caused when the body’s immune system itself attacks various organs and tissues. This inflammation can attack many vital organs of our body including joints, bones, kidney, blood cells heart and lungs. Lupus is found more frequently among females. The causes for lupus can be many but the most important among them is estrogen (female hormone) increase in estrogen can activate the body’s immune system which may attack the body cells itself. Chronic disease management can help the patients suffering from lupus to lead an active life.
One of the main problems of lupus is that patients are not able to convey their illness to others. The main symptom of lupus is fatigue which cannot be measured. Lupus causes arthritis but the arthritis caused by lupus is not destructive to bones and joints though it is loosened. Lupus can be distinguished from arthritis with the help of diagnostic tests. Memory
problems disturb patients suffering from lupus. Another symptom shown by lupus patients is hair loss also termed as alopecia failure in diagnosis and proper treatment can make the hair loss permanent. Lupus also produces skin rashes, inflamed joints, low blood counts and kidney disorders. Diagnosis at the right time and proper treatment measures plays an important role in its chronic disease management.
Diets and medication are the important measures taken in chronic disease management of lupus. One of the organs most frequently affected by lupus is bones. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamins and proper medications are necessary to prevent fracture of bones or else lupus can even cause death. The extent of damage caused can be determined with a bone density scan. Lupus patients are likely to have risk factors due to heart diseases, coronary artery disease and stroke ignorance can lead to even death, to prevent a low fat and low cholesterol diet is to be followed by them. Another measure taken is use of medicines to push down the immune system to an optimum level. Plaquenil, DHEA, Cellcept are the common medicines used. Anti- TNF therapy, Chemotherapy, Stem cell transplant also helps to cure lupus.
